News in brief from abroad

DUBLIN (IGNA) Dublin's High Court recently upheld the Irish Republic's law against homosexual acts, rejecting a university professor's challenge that the. law is unconstitutional.

David Norris, a founding member and chairman of the Irish Gay Rights movement, said that the ruling was "a great dissappointment," but he vowed to continue his court battle to legalize homosexuality in Roman

Catholic Ireland.

"There will be an appeal to the Irish Supreme Court and we'll take the case on to the European Court of Human Rights, if necessary," said Norris, a lecturer in English at Trinity College in Dublin.

Norris sued the attorney general in July to make a declaration that certain sections of the Offenses Against the Person Act, enacted in 1861, are inconsistent

Norris claimed that the law makes him a second-class citizen since he is gay.

But Judge Herbert McWilliam said that the statues do not violate the constitution, and added that sexuality should be confined to lawful marriage.

This case was the latest in a series of challenges to the republic's strict laws on moral issues, including divorce and contraception.

Catholic churchmen and politicians have resisted efforts to legalize divorce, but following widespread pressure the government will soon introduce a law permitting limited sales of

birth control devices.

SCOTLAND (IGNA) The House of Commons in England has voted 203 to 80 to bring the law concerning homosexual activity into line with that in England and Wales.

many activists are also opposed to the provision in the law that makes homosexual activity between merchant seamen illegal.

MEXICO CITY (IGNA) On The amendment in the law December 13 and 14, 1980, Mex came about because of a prop-ico, will be holding its first national gay congress.

osal to the Criminal Justice Bill of Scotland made by Robin Cook, Labor MP for Edinburgh Central.

Although generally pleased with the alteration, some Scottish gay rights groups are angry that an "age of consent" of 21 is incorporated in the law. The groups feel that is too high on age.
